Why doesn't #Mozilla just take Chromium and slowly rebuild it in Rust? Seems inefficient to rebuild Firefox as Chrome and then rebuild it in Rust.

@33MHz rebuild Firefox as Chrome? O_o

@thrrgilag slowly, over years...

I just mean the WebExtension APIs they're copying from Chrome, currently.

@33MHz gotcha. I haven't spent time with Rust but I got the impression that Rust wasn't fully there as a language yet. I suppose if they are going to make it a power house language then a big project is what it needs.

@thrrgilag bits and pieces of Rust are in FF already.
121447
@33MHz so Firefox is slowly getting rusty then… :p
121448
@thrrgilag they're chroming it, but the chrome is rusting, yeah.

@33MHz Servo is their pure-Rust next gen renderer. Will lay Gecko to rest. Previews are available now, with a cute Doge icon on the app bundle. @thrrgilag

@jws yeah. They're building it in parallel so presumably things will merge progressively. Just seems silly to work so hard to match Chrome, while making a massive effort to replace everything. Ofc, the rust parts are low level, so no diff.

@33MHz Exposing a lot of internal API to extensions probably tied their hands for evolving Firefox. I'm waiting to see what I lose when the old add-ons finally stop working.

@jws tech preview flashes on screen and then disappears, on work and home PCs :(

@33MHz don't look at me to explain the inexplicable.
