@33MHz both really, it has it's own protocol (DFRN) but speaks a few others natively such as activitypub and then has add-ons which hooks into other social networks. appt.net used to be one such add-on.

@joe it is indeed, it supports activitypub and some of the people I follow on mastodon are actually on friendica instances.
