This is most often annoying when I type a number w/o area code, and it doesn't associate the call w/future calls/texts from that number.

It does make calls w/o area code appropriately. But it should auto-add the area code instead, to normalize the number, if it's going to work this way.

It would be fun if dialing handled the first three digits of a number like area codes; if you share them, you don't need to dial them. Haha.
