Lord of the Rings - Sam Gamgee

I had this long-time irritation that I was sure came from movie fans. In my mind, book fans always say "Sam" and movie fans always say "Samwise." I didn't even recall "Samwise" being in LOTR until the Appendices. Well the truth is: Fellowship of the Ring: "Sam" 229, "Samwise" 2 - only in the Foreword! The Two Towers: "Sam" 246, "Samwise" 19 Return of the King: "Sam" 251, "Samwise" 7 The name "Samwise" definitely is in the novel, although not often! As for what fans call him, I don't know if I'm right or wrong! :-)…
