I like this explanation of what a nerd is, although I don't like the verb forms of these things at all.
"Chefs are certainly food nerds."
But by his definition, I think many chefs of course are simply being disciplined in their field.

I don't study Internet protocols "because I'm a networking nerd". But I do learn about graphics processors "because I'm a hardware nerd."
