What's crazy is that this "foundation", which goes down 20-30", was... decoration? The porch was built on top of the floor joists, which are sitting on top of blocks inside the foundation, on top of dirt! Unbelievably bad choice for a 2-story structure.

@33MHz Did it start out two storeys or were storeys added later, once the "foundation" was hidden and forgotten?

@mcdemarco purpose built two stories! Now, the second story was open to the outside, but it still had a quite heavy roof on top of it.

The wood is treated, but for "above ground". Could have been OK, but, there was still significant water and termite damage.
